Data Backup - Do You Have a Backup and Data Recovery Plan in Place ?

backup

Data backup is rarely a part of a plan or IT administrators are now computer users at home, we all know that will never happen to me or my company say, but in reality it is just mentally preparing for the time we lose our data.

It's like trying to stop smoking, we all know we should, but we'll find all sorts of reasons not to. Be honest with yourself and ask yourself, do you have a backup plan for your data, or more importantly, if you have a restoration plan to protect your business in case of problems?

All business leaders and owners will now tell you that the computer via an important part of our lives, but now they are an absolute necessity. We realize that the data that resides on our computer infrastructure is the most important asset of any organization. I ask again, what would happen if you lost your data and what are you doing to protect it?

The reasons for data loss are endless, human intervention, hardware failure, software, natural disaster, loss, theft, we can go forward, but we can be sure of one thing, as time goes on the list longer and longer.
Always something stolen or lost anything before?

I've been in the IT industry for about 25 years, and you can imagine, I heard a strange story about how they had stolen computers and servers. Laptops stolen from the back seat of cars (data lost), a colleague forgot he left his laptop on the roof of your car; problem is he realized when he was 160 miles down the road (lost data).

My friend's office broke twice in two nights, first time resulted in loss of desktop computers and alarm systems were completely destroyed (loss of data), and the second night was to take a server with a backup device and media!

Apparently the heavy stuff was stolen the second night thieves take more time because the alarm was not repaired quickly enough (total loss of data and company ceased trading within 8 months). Save your money; prevent data loss, first by implementing a data backup plan.

Clerical error

If you have lost a laptop or had stolen all of the infrastructure and well done, is now ready to go to a hardware fault. There are mainly three mechanical parts within a laptop, computer or server;

1) hard drive,

2) backup drive

3) CD or DVD.

Hard drives fail, and if it does not happen, it will. Make no mistake, if you take a drive fails expert, perhaps more data (phew) but expect to pay more than £ 5000 for the pleasure (not phew). Save your money; prevent data loss, first by implementing a data " backup " plan.

Fires or disasters (natural or not).

I live in the UK, is a very nice place, because we do not have a problem with forest fires, earthquakes and hurricanes etc. so there will never be a natural disaster that eliminates over a city. That's what I thought until oil refinery blew up and flattened Bunsfield all within 3 miles.

There are a thousand and one reasons and scenarios I can give you describe why you need to backup your business data. We all know that the practice of data backup is nothing more than common sense. Facts are not sensitive or mission critical or can not afford to lose should be ensured. Protect your data!

If you truly believe that you do not need to backup your data, you will never lose, please stop reading this article now and go do something less boring.

We will talk about ways to secure data and other backup services. If these are taken on board, you will be able to find solutions that suit you or your business.
CD backup solutions.

To back up your data files to CD easily, can take a long time to do this every night and you have the discipline to put more aside an hour to complete this task every night. To backup the data on the CD is not an automatic process and we all know that people are busy. Once you have backed up your data on a CD please always verify that the data is actually on the CD, then take home with you. No authorization items stolen or destroyed by the fire with your hardware.

Please do not make us a CD of data archive (insurance documents for a long time) and I do not expect this type of media is stable for more than 2 years.
Backup CD has many limitations, but it is certainly better than no backup of your data at all.

RAID - No reserve, but will protect your server's disk.
All servers should have every chance to stay alive, which uses a RAID configuration will help prevent the loss of data due to hard drive failure. If you have 3 drives running in a RAID 5 configuration, the server can tolerate a single disk failure. RAID does not protect you against fire, flood, theft or other disaster occurs, but provide business continuity.
This solution does not protect against theft in general as an additional hard disk RAID storage are usually installed on your computer or other equipment on the site. Usually do not protect you against fire or if this method has its limitations.

Secure remote backup and recovery of data through a third party.
Remote backup or backup via the Internet method usually associated with large companies in the sector. In the past, the high cost of high speed connectivity is expensive for small businesses.
This method of data backup converted completely acceptable and gaining momentum around the world. The main reason of this fact and because the price of broadband connections has been reduced significantly, almost all businesses and homes connected to the Internet through a pipe 2 MB minimum because now it is possible for high-volume data center offsite secure data backup.

For me, the best part of the offsite backup solutions are not strong level of encryption in place, prices or reproduced purpose data storage infrastructure design, but not a remote backup solution is fully automated process. Set and forget, once you have configured the software to backup your data at any time of the day, you can just forget and let you focus on your job to protect your data.
If I control the backup process, I want to implement the three options. A RAID system for business continuity, secure offsite backup to protect all the data from my company, and allows rapid recovery, backup CDs only my mission critical data to continue to operate my business.
